How to Build a Simple Backyard Firewood Rack

Keeping firewood neatly stacked can make a backyard look more organized while helping protect the wood from sitting directly on damp ground.

A simple firewood rack can be made from basic lumber and outdoor-rated hardware. Before starting, check local rules if you plan to store firewood near a structure or property boundary.

What You’ll Need

For a basic rack, you may need:

• Outdoor-rated lumber
• Exterior-grade screws or appropriate fasteners
• Measuring tape
• Saw suitable for your lumber
• Drill and drill bits
• Level
• Exterior wood treatment, if appropriate
• Work gloves and safety glasses

Choose dimensions based on how much firewood you normally store.

Step 1: Choose the Location

Pick a level, well-drained location that is convenient for bringing wood into the house or outdoor fire area.

Avoid placing the rack directly against the exterior wall of your home. Keeping stored firewood away from buildings can also help reduce opportunities for insects and moisture to transfer to the structure.

Step 2: Determine the Size

Measure the available space and decide how much wood the rack needs to hold.

A smaller rack may be sufficient for occasional backyard use, while households that regularly use a wood-burning fireplace may need a larger storage system.

Don’t build the rack larger than necessary. A manageable stack is easier to organize and inspect.

Step 3: Build the Base

The base should keep firewood elevated above the ground.

Create a rectangular frame from suitable outdoor lumber and add supporting pieces across the frame. Check the structure with a level before continuing.

The goal is simple: provide a stable platform with enough clearance underneath for air circulation.

Step 4: Add Upright Supports

Install upright supports at the ends of the rack. These pieces help prevent logs from rolling outward.

Secure each upright carefully and check that it remains vertical.

Step 5: Check Stability

Before adding firewood, gently test the empty rack for movement. Tighten or reinforce connections if necessary.

A rack carrying several rows of logs can become considerably heavier than it looks.

Step 6: Protect the Wood

A roof or simple cover can help protect the top of the firewood stack from rain and snow.

Leave the sides open enough to encourage airflow. Avoid wrapping a woodpile completely in plastic, since trapped moisture can interfere with drying.

Step 7: Stack the Firewood Safely

Place larger, stable pieces toward the bottom and stack the wood evenly.

Don’t make the pile excessively tall. A lower, stable stack is easier to manage than an unstable tower.

Maintenance

Inspect the rack periodically for cracked boards, loose fasteners, rot, or other damage. Replace compromised components before the rack becomes unstable.

Also check the firewood itself for excessive moisture, insects, or decay.

Final Thoughts

A basic firewood rack doesn’t need to be complicated. The important features are stability, ground clearance, airflow, and a location that makes sense for your property.

If you use a fireplace or wood-burning appliance, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for firewood storage and operation.
